Introduction

ProSeries is the most widely used paid professional tax software in the country. The 2025 Journal of Accountancy survey of 2,011 tax professionals found it at 10.5% market share, the second-highest of any product measured. That market position is real. But market-share leadership and the right fit for your practice are two different questions, and for independent and small-office preparers, the gap between them is significant.

This comparison covers the factors that actually drive the decision for independent preparers: total cost at real filing volumes, bank product integration, Spanish-language form availability, and support responsiveness. Where ProSeries is genuinely the stronger choice, we say so directly. Americas Tax is an authorized TaxWise reseller, so this comparison has a point of view, but the goal is to give you enough accurate information to make the right call for your practice.

All pricing references in this article are based on published rates as of tax year 2025. ProSeries pricing changes annually. Verify current ProSeries pricing at accountants.intuit.com and current TaxWise pricing at americastax.com/software.html before purchasing.

Who Each Product Is Actually Built For

The most efficient way to use this comparison is to determine early whether these two products are genuinely competing for your practice. In many cases, they are not.

ProSeries: Built for Established CPA and EA Firms

ProSeries was designed for small to mid-sized CPA and EA firms handling a mix of individual and business entity returns. Its strengths map directly to that profile: a 3,700-plus form library covering complex fiduciary, estate, and multi-entity returns; 1,000-plus built-in pre-filing diagnostics; trial balance import from QuickBooks Desktop Accountant; a direct migration path from Lacerte (both are Intuit products); and Quick Employer Forms for W-2 and 1099 filing. The Intuit Link client portal and Intuit Sign e-signatures extend the platform for firms already embedded in the Intuit ecosystem.

ProSeries Professional is the full-featured tier. ProSeries Basic is a lower-cost, 1040-only version with a capped return count, single-user access, and no bank product capability. If you are a credentialed preparer at a small firm with a mixed entity client base and an English-speaking client roster, ProSeries has genuine strengths. That audience is real, and the product deserves its market share among them.

If you are building or running an independent tax practice focused on individual 1040 returns, the ProSeries feature set you are paying for largely serves a different preparer's needs.

TaxWise (via ATP): Built for Independent and Seasonal Preparers

TaxWise was designed for high-volume 1040 offices, independent and seasonal preparers, service bureaus, ITIN specialists, and bilingual practices. Its pricing model is flat and predictable. Its workflow supports both interview-guided entry for newer preparers and direct forms-based input for experienced ones. It has more than 60 tax forms available in Spanish, native bank product integration (Refund Transfer and Refund Advance built directly into the platform), and unlimited users and workstations at no additional charge.

Americas Tax (ATP) is an authorized TaxWise reseller and IRS-authorized e-file transmitter operating since 2001. When you buy TaxWise through ATP, you get the software plus the reseller layer: unlimited phone support from a team focused on independent preparers, service bureau infrastructure including Central Office Manager, and bank product enrollment support.

The practical question: if your practice is primarily 1040 preparation for wage earners, gig workers, and self-employed individuals, and you rely on bank products or serve Spanish-speaking clients, ProSeries is built for a different preparer and priced accordingly. TaxWise is built for your practice specifically.

Pricing and Total Cost at Real Filing Volumes

Published software price and actual annual cost are two different numbers. The comparison below uses all-in figures including transmission fees, so you can see what each product actually costs at the volume your practice runs.

TaxWise Through ATP

TaxWise through Americas Tax is $675 per year paid in full. A 12-month payment plan is available: $55 down and 12 payments of $60, totaling $775. This covers unlimited individual returns and unlimited users on unlimited workstations. An All-States add-on (covering all 50 states beyond the five states included in the base package) is $295 per year. A Business Package add-on covering entity returns (1120, 1065, 1041, 706, 709, and exempt organizations) is $345 per year.

Per-return e-file transmission fees apply separately. Federal transmission runs $4.75 per return for the first 75 returns, stepping down in volume tiers. State transmission runs $3.20 per return in the initial tier, also stepping down. Returns with a bank product carry a $10 federal transmission fee; returns without a bank product carry $4.75 (or lower at volume). See americastax.com/efile.html for current transmission rates.

ProSeries Pricing Plans

ProSeries is sold in two structural models, and the difference between them is large enough to matter in your evaluation:

  • Pay-Per-Return (PPR): $539/yr base fee, plus $69 per federal 1040, $61 per state individual return, and $99 per federal business return. This is the most common entry point for small independents looking at ProSeries.
  • ProSeries Basic (tiered flat fee, 1040-only): Basic 20 at $729/yr; Basic 50 at $1,099/yr; Basic Unlimited at $1,899/yr. Single-user. Limited state coverage. No bank product access on any Basic tier.
  • ProSeries 1040 Essentials Unlimited: Approximately $2,605/yr at promotional pricing (list price starts at $4,007/yr). Covers unlimited individual returns for Professional-tier users.

ProSeries pricing has increased consistently year over year; community forum threads document roughly 6% annual increases, with long-time customers frequently paying more than new customers for the same tier.

Total Cost Comparison at 50, 100, and 200 Returns

Assumptions below: one preparer, one state per client, 100% Form 1040 individual returns, no business returns. ProSeries PPR figures use published 2025 per-return rates. TaxWise figures use ATP software pricing plus tiered transmission fees.

Annual all-in cost for TaxWise (ATP) vs ProSeries at 50, 100, and 200 individual returns
Product / Plan 50 Returns 100 Returns 200 Returns
TaxWise via ATP (software + transmission) approx. $1,125 approx. $1,470 approx. $1,865
ProSeries Basic Unlimited (flat fee) $1,899 $1,899 $1,899
ProSeries Pay-Per-Return ($539 base + $69 fed + $61 state) approx. $6,539 approx. $13,539 approx. $26,539

Pricing as of tax year 2025. ProSeries rates change annually; verify current rates at accountants.intuit.com before purchasing. TaxWise rates verified at americastax.com/software.html.

The honest read on these numbers: ProSeries PPR is not a rational pricing choice at 100 or more returns per year. The fair sticker-price comparison for independent preparers is TaxWise at approximately $1,470 versus ProSeries Basic Unlimited at $1,899 at 100 returns. TaxWise is cheaper. But more importantly, ProSeries Basic Unlimited excludes bank products entirely, is single-user, and covers limited states. The value equation is not close.

At 200 returns, TaxWise and ProSeries Basic Unlimited are within $35 of each other on raw software cost. At that volume, the deciding factors are the features Basic Unlimited does not offer: native bank products, Spanish forms, and multi-user access. At 300 returns, ProSeries Basic Unlimited's $1,899 ceiling competes against ProSeries 1040 Essentials Unlimited at $2,605 or more, while TaxWise continues at approximately $2,175 all-in and includes all the features Basic excludes.

Bank Products: Native Integration vs. Third-Party Add-On

For independent preparers, bank products (Refund Transfer and Refund Advance) are often a central part of the service model: the client gets faster access to their refund, and the preparer collects their fee from the refund settlement rather than out-of-pocket from the client. How each platform handles this is a meaningful structural difference.

TaxWise: Built Into the Platform

TaxWise has Refund Transfer and Refund Advance capabilities built natively into the software. Bank product selection, client enrollment, and settlement tracking all occur within the standard TaxWise workflow. There is no separate vendor portal to log into, no separate enrollment application to manage, and no parallel system to train staff on. The banking partners available through TaxWise include established providers in the professional tax market.

For a practice where bank products are offered on a high percentage of returns, the operational simplicity of a single integrated workflow has real value. For a complete overview of how Refund Transfers and Refund Advances work in professional tax software, see the bank products overview at americastax.com/bank-products.html.

ProSeries Professional: Third-Party Enrollment Required

ProSeries Professional users can access bank products through a "Pay-by-Refund" program via two third-party partners: Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (SBTPG) and Refund Advantage. This is not an Intuit-built feature. It is a third-party arrangement that requires separate enrollment with the banking partner, a separate account with that partner's portal, and a workflow that operates partly outside the ProSeries environment.

The bank fee for these programs is charged to the client's refund: Refund Advantage carries approximately $39.95 bank fee plus $19.95 technology fee per transaction; SBTPG carries approximately $44.95 plus $19.95. These are client-side fees that reduce the client's net refund amount, which can affect your competitive positioning against offices offering lower total fees. For a ProSeries Professional user who needs bank products and is willing to manage the third-party enrollment, the capability is there. It simply requires more setup and runs in a separate workflow.

ProSeries Basic: No Bank Product Access

ProSeries Basic, the more affordable flat-fee version, has no bank product access at all. There is no enrollment path, no Pay-by-Refund integration, and no refund advance capability. If bank products are part of your service model, ProSeries Basic is not a viable option for your practice, regardless of its pricing advantage over ProSeries Professional tiers.

This is the sharpest practical gap for independent preparers evaluating ProSeries Basic as an entry point: the version they can afford does not support the service their clients expect.

Spanish-Language Forms and Bilingual Service

This is not a close comparison.

TaxWise includes more than 60 federal tax forms and schedules available in Spanish, with on-screen display in Spanish and the ability to print client copies in the client's preferred language. Form 1040, Schedule C, Schedule E, and supporting forms are among those available bilingually. Americas Tax also operates a bilingual support line, so preparers serving Spanish-speaking clients can get help in their own language during filing season.

ProSeries is English-only. Both ProSeries Professional and ProSeries Basic have no Spanish-language forms, no bilingual interface option, and no Spanish-language client materials. Intuit's own ProSeries product pages make no mention of Spanish-language capability. Third-party software review platforms including GetApp and SoftwareAdvice list ProSeries supported languages as English only. This is not a gap in the current version pending a future update; it reflects the product's target market.

For preparers serving Spanish-speaking taxpayer populations in California, Texas, Florida, New York, or Arizona, this is a functional capability gap, not a preference. A client who receives their return printed in Spanish, with all forms labeled in their language, has a materially different experience than one given an English-only document and asked to trust a translation they cannot verify. For a bilingual practice, TaxWise is the only professional-grade option of the two products reviewed here.

Support: Unlimited vs. Self-Service

Tax software support is not a background feature. An unresolved software question during the February or March rush has a direct cost: a return delayed, a client waiting, and a preparer's time consumed. How each platform handles support is worth evaluating as a core part of the total package.

TaxWise Through ATP: Unlimited Support Included

When you buy TaxWise through Americas Tax, unlimited customer support is included in the package. The support line is staffed by people focused on independent preparers specifically, not a general software help desk. Bilingual support is available. ATP has operated continuously since 2001; the team's institutional knowledge of the independent preparer environment is a structural advantage over a large publisher's rotating support queue.

TaxWise also provides an online Solution Center with documentation, training materials, and a knowledge base. But the unlimited phone support is what matters at 9 p.m. in February when a return is not transmitting correctly.

ProSeries: Support Complaints Are Well-Documented

The 2025 Journal of Accountancy survey of tax professionals found that 75.4% of ProSeries users reported receiving no training from Intuit. That is the second-highest no-training rate among all major products in the survey. Community forums maintained by ProSeries users document phone wait times of up to four hours during peak filing season. Intuit discontinued online chat support for ProSeries; the digital assistant (a chatbot) is now the primary self-service option before reaching a live representative.

These are published, third-party data points. Individual support experiences vary, and ProSeries does have phone and documentation resources. The pattern documented in survey data and community forums suggests that Intuit's support infrastructure at ProSeries scale operates on a different model than a smaller, specialized reseller focused on independent preparers.

For a solo preparer without a colleague to call when a problem comes up, the quality and responsiveness of support is a business continuity issue. Unlimited responsive support is one of the reasons to buy TaxWise through ATP rather than through a larger channel.

Where ProSeries Is the Stronger Choice

An honest comparison requires saying this clearly: ProSeries has real strengths, and for the right type of practice, it is the right choice. Here is where it wins.

Complex and Multi-Entity Returns

ProSeries Professional's 3,700-plus form library significantly exceeds TaxWise's coverage for complex fiduciary, estate, and multi-entity work. If your practice handles trusts (Form 1041), partnerships (Form 1065), C-corps (Form 1120), S-corps (Form 1120S), estate tax returns (Form 706), and gift tax returns (Form 709) alongside individual 1040s, ProSeries has more depth. The 1,000-plus built-in diagnostics also provide a pre-filing safety net that is a genuine workflow asset for complex returns.

TaxWise does offer a Business Package add-on covering 1120, 1065, 1041, 706, 709, and exempt organizations, but ProSeries Professional's diagnostic depth and form breadth for multi-entity work is the stronger product in that category.

QuickBooks Desktop and Lacerte Integration

ProSeries Professional supports trial balance import from QuickBooks Desktop Accountant. For a preparer who also handles bookkeeping and produces financials in QuickBooks, this integration removes a manual entry step that has real time value. TaxWise has no equivalent.

For firms that anticipate growing toward Lacerte, ProSeries is a logical stepping stone: both are Intuit products and share data migration paths. If your growth trajectory runs in that direction, ProSeries's position inside the Intuit ecosystem has structural value.

Brand Recognition and Peer Community

ProSeries has 10.5% market share among professional preparers, per the 2025 Journal of Accountancy survey. It appears in more job postings, more continuing education references, and more peer recommendations within CPA and EA communities than TaxWise. If you hire staff, there is a reasonable chance a candidate already knows ProSeries. That training-cost reduction is a real consideration for multi-preparer firms.

Intuit Ecosystem Tools

ProSeries users who are already embedded in the Intuit product stack get administrative efficiency benefits from consolidated tools: Quick Employer Forms for unlimited W-2 and 1099 filing, Intuit Link for client document collection, and Intuit Sign for e-signature workflows. For a firm already using these products, adding ProSeries as the tax preparation layer has a lower total integration cost than switching any component.

If you are not embedded in the Intuit ecosystem already, these integrations have less value, and the switching costs of adopting the full stack are real.

Making the Decision: Questions to Ask Yourself

The right choice depends on which of these questions you answer yes to.

Choose TaxWise Through ATP If:

  • Your practice is primarily individual 1040 preparation: W-2 wage earners, gig workers, or self-employed individuals on Schedule C or E.
  • Bank products (Refund Transfer, Refund Advance) are part of how you get paid or how you compete against H&R Block and Liberty Tax in your market.
  • You serve Spanish-speaking clients and want to give them forms in their language.
  • You are running 50 to 300 returns per season and want predictable annual software cost that does not increase 6% every year.
  • You want unlimited users so you can add a seasonal hire without a per-seat upgrade charge.
  • You want responsive support from a team that specializes in independent preparers, not a large publisher's help queue. For more on what the ATP package includes, see americastax.com/software.html.
  • You need access to continuing education for your PTIN renewal, IRS Annual Filing Season Program, or CTEC requirements, and want discounted access to an IRS-approved school through your software reseller.

Choose ProSeries Professional If:

  • You are a CPA or EA with a mixed practice: individual returns plus a meaningful volume of partnership, corporate, trust, or estate returns.
  • You use QuickBooks Desktop Accountant and want trial balance import without a manual step.
  • You are already in the Intuit ecosystem (QuickBooks, Lacerte) and value consolidated infrastructure.
  • Your client base is English-speaking, bank products are not part of your service model, and form depth for complex returns is your primary requirement.
  • Your practice is established, you view $2,600 or more per year as standard software infrastructure, and you want the broadest possible form library with deep diagnostic coverage.

Do Not Choose ProSeries Basic If:

  • You need bank products. ProSeries Basic has no bank product access on any tier.
  • You serve Spanish-speaking clients. ProSeries Basic is English-only.
  • You want to add a second preparer or seasonal help. ProSeries Basic is single-user only.
  • You file returns in more than one or two states. State coverage is limited on Basic tiers.

ProSeries Basic Unlimited at $1,899 per year can look like a reasonable flat-fee option until you map its exclusions against what your practice actually needs. For most independent preparers, the version of ProSeries they can afford (Basic) is the version that excludes the features they need most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ProSeries have bank products?

ProSeries Professional users can access bank products through a Pay-by-Refund program via third-party partners (Santa Barbara Tax Products Group and Refund Advantage). This requires a separate enrollment with the banking partner and operates through a portal outside of ProSeries, not inside the Intuit software workflow. ProSeries Basic has no bank product access at all, on any tier. TaxWise has Refund Transfer and Refund Advance built natively into the platform, with enrollment handled within the standard workflow and no separate application to a third-party portal. For more detail, see americastax.com/bank-products.html.

Does ProSeries have Spanish forms?

No. ProSeries is English-only on both the Professional and Basic tiers. There are no Spanish-language forms, no bilingual interface option, and no Spanish-language client materials. TaxWise includes more than 60 tax forms and schedules in Spanish, with on-screen display and client print in Spanish. Americas Tax also provides a bilingual support line for preparers serving Spanish-speaking clients.

How much does ProSeries cost at 100 returns per year?

On the ProSeries Pay-Per-Return plan, filing 100 individual returns costs approximately $13,539 per year: a $539 base fee plus $69 per federal 1040 and $61 per state return, as of tax year 2025. ProSeries Basic Unlimited at $1,899 per year is the flat-fee alternative, but it excludes bank products entirely, is single-user, and covers limited states. TaxWise through Americas Tax at 100 returns totals approximately $1,470 all-in (software at $675 plus tiered transmission fees) and includes native bank products, Spanish forms, and unlimited users. Verify current pricing at each vendor before purchasing.

What does buying TaxWise through ATP include?

Purchasing TaxWise through Americas Tax includes the TaxWise software, ATP membership as an IRS-authorized e-file provider, unlimited phone support with bilingual staff available, service bureau infrastructure including Central Office Manager and bank product enrollment support, and access to IRS-approved and CTEC-approved continuing education courses through GSTTI at member referral rates. GSTTI is the course provider; ATP is not. CE is not included in the purchase price. Members receive discounted access by entering ATP as the referral code at checkout. For more on CE requirements, see the AFSP guide at americastax.com/afsp-annual-filing-season-program.html. Contact Americas Tax at 224-388-1774 or info@americastax.com with package questions.

Who is ProSeries designed for?

ProSeries was designed for CPA and EA firms handling a mix of individual and business entity returns, particularly practices already using QuickBooks Desktop or moving toward Lacerte. Its 3,700-plus form library, diagnostic depth, and Intuit ecosystem integrations fit firms with credentialed staff, varied client entity types, and an English-speaking client base. ProSeries is not the right fit for price-sensitive independent or seasonal preparers who need bank products, Spanish forms, or multi-user access at a low entry cost.

Is TaxWise cheaper than ProSeries?

Yes, at the volumes where most independent preparers operate. TaxWise through Americas Tax totals approximately $1,470 at 100 returns and $1,865 at 200 returns. ProSeries Basic Unlimited is $1,899 per year at any volume but excludes bank products, Spanish forms, and multi-user access. ProSeries Pay-Per-Return exceeds $13,000 at 100 returns. At 300 returns, ProSeries 1040 Essentials Unlimited starts at approximately $2,605 per year (promotional rate), while TaxWise totals approximately $2,175. ATP pricing has remained stable year over year; ProSeries users report approximately 6% annual increases. All figures based on tax year 2025 published rates; verify current pricing before purchasing.
