IRS-Authorized E-File Transmission Services for Professional Tax Preparers
America's Tax Professionals (ATP) is an IRS-authorized e-file transmitter. Authorization is issued and renewed directly by the IRS. ATP has maintained this authorization continuously since 2001.
If you are a credentialed tax preparer who needs IRS e-file transmission, ATP transmits for all 50 states. A TaxWise software purchase is not required to use ATP's transmission service. Call 224-388-1774 to get pricing for your office.

What IRS Authorization Means
The IRS does not allow any party to transmit e-filed returns without specific authorization. To become an authorized transmitter, a provider must apply to the IRS, meet technical standards, and maintain those standards through ongoing compliance.
ATP is listed on the IRS EFILE Authorized Provider database. This is not a general business credential. Authorization is specific to e-file transmission and is issued per entity by the IRS. ATP's authorization covers federal returns and state returns in all 50 states.

What ATP Transmits
ATP's transmission service covers the return types below. ATP transmits returns; it does not prepare them.
Covered Return Types
- Federal returns: 1040 series and associated schedules
- State returns: all 50 states
- Business returns: contact us to confirm which business return types are covered for your practice
What Is Not Covered
Return preparation. ATP transmits returns prepared by the credentialed tax preparer. ATP is not a return preparer and does not verify the accuracy of client data.
Software. Transmission is software-independent. ATP receives the return from your preparation software and transmits it to the IRS. The software you use to prepare returns is separate from the transmission service.
Software compatibility: contact us to confirm your preparation software is compatible with ATP's transmission system.
How E-File Transmission Works
A tax preparer's software generates the return file in IRS-specified format. That file must travel through an IRS-authorized intermediary before it reaches the IRS systems. That intermediary is the transmitter. ATP is the authorized intermediary between your office and the IRS.
Prepare the return
You prepare the return in your tax software. When the return is complete, your software generates the IRS-specified file.
File sent to ATP
Your software sends the completed return file to ATP's transmission system.
ATP transmits to the IRS
ATP transmits the file to the IRS (or the applicable state agency) through the authorized channel.
IRS sends acknowledgment
The IRS or state agency sends an acknowledgment: accepted or rejected. Acknowledgment timing is set by the IRS, not by ATP.
Acknowledgment relayed
ATP relays the acknowledgment back to your software. ATP transmits the file; the IRS controls the acknowledgment queue.
Who Uses Standalone Transmission
Standalone e-file transmission is the right fit for preparers who:
- Already have tax preparation software from a different vendor and need an authorized transmission path
- Are evaluating their current software contract and need transmission services while they decide
- Prepare a return volume that does not justify a full annual software purchase
- Need a backup transmitter during filing season
If you are buying TaxWise software through ATP, e-file transmission is included with your package. You do not need to purchase transmission separately.
Pricing and Enrollment
Transmission pricing varies based on return volume and the specific services required. ATP does not publish a one-size rate because preparer offices vary significantly in size and return mix.

Common Questions
Do I need to buy TaxWise to use ATP's e-file transmission service?
No. ATP offers standalone e-file transmission services for preparers who already have tax preparation software but need an IRS-authorized transmission path. If you are buying TaxWise through ATP, transmission is included with every package.
Is ATP an IRS-authorized e-file transmitter?
Yes. ATP is listed on the IRS EFILE Authorized Provider database. You can verify this independently on the IRS website. Authorization is specific to e-file transmission and is issued per entity by the IRS, not a general business license.
Which states can ATP transmit returns for?
ATP is authorized to transmit state returns for all 50 states. One relationship with ATP covers your full federal and state filing needs.
How long does it take to receive an IRS acknowledgment?
Acknowledgment timing is set by the IRS and the relevant state agencies, not by ATP. ATP transmits the file promptly; the IRS controls the acknowledgment queue. During peak filing season, IRS acknowledgment times can vary.
Is my preparation software compatible with ATP's transmission system?
ATP's transmission system accepts return files from most professional tax preparation software. Contact us at 224-388-1774 to confirm your specific software is supported before enrolling.
