Introduction
Drake Tax and TaxWise are two of the most established platforms for independent tax preparers. Both have decades of use behind them, both support federal and state e-filing, and both are capable of handling the returns most small offices file every season. The decision between them comes down to four practical factors: how you want to pay for software, the return volume you handle each year, whether your client base includes Spanish-speaking taxpayers, and whether integrated bank products are part of your practice.
This article compares them directly across each of those factors, with current pricing, a side-by-side table, and a fit assessment for different practice types. Americas Tax (ATP) is an authorized TaxWise reseller and IRS-authorized e-file transmitter, so this article has a perspective: when the fit is genuinely equal, we favor TaxWise. When Drake is the better fit for a specific situation, we say so. Our goal is to give you the information to make the right call for your own practice, not to close a sale at the wrong fit.
All pricing in this article is as of June 2026 from each vendor's published pricing. Prices change annually; verify current pricing at drakesoftware.com and at americastax.com/software.html before purchasing.
The Core Difference: Pricing Model
Drake and TaxWise are structured differently at the pricing level, and that difference drives most of the decision for independent preparers.
Drake Tax: Two Product Lines
Drake now offers two distinct products. Traditional Drake Tax is the desktop platform most preparers know. In late 2025, Drake launched Drake Tax Online (DTO), a browser-native cloud product with no desktop install. The two are priced differently and serve different use cases.
Traditional Drake Tax pricing (as of June 2026 from Drake's published pricing; verify at drakesoftware.com before purchasing): Pay-Per-Return plan at $379.99 per year with 10 returns included; Drake Pro Unlimited at $3,295 per year for unlimited returns. Drake Tax Online (DTO) is priced at $299.99 per user plus $43 per individual return and $64.50 per business return. DTO volume discounts: approximately $40 per individual return at 25 to 49 returns, approximately $25 per individual return at 50 or more returns.
TaxWise Through ATP: Flat Annual Fee
Through Americas Tax, TaxWise is priced as a flat annual fee: $675 for Individual 1040 (unlimited individual returns), with an All States add-on at $295 and Business Package at $345. TaxWise Online 100 is $1,849 per year flat, covering up to 100 individual returns with cloud and desktop access included. These prices are for the Americas Tax reseller tier; verify current pricing at americastax.com/software.html as prices change annually.
Break-Even Math: When Each Model Costs Less
The practical question is where each model crosses over. At the DTO per-return rate of $43 per individual return, the break-even against TaxWise at $675 flat falls at approximately 15 to 16 individual returns per year. Above that volume, TaxWise at $675 costs less.
To put numbers on it: an independent preparer filing 80 individual returns per year would pay approximately $299.99 plus (80 times $43) equals $3,740 with DTO. The same volume through TaxWise Individual 1040 at $675 flat is $675. That is a difference of more than $3,000 per year at 80 returns. The gap grows with volume. At 50 returns, the DTO rate drops to roughly $25 per return with the volume discount, making the DTO total approximately $299.99 plus (50 times $25) equals $1,550, still considerably more than the TaxWise $675 flat.
For higher-volume practices comparing Drake Pro Unlimited ($3,295) against TaxWise Online 100 ($1,849), TaxWise Online costs $1,446 less per year. The comparison shifts for very high volume offices where Drake Pro Unlimited covers returns well above the TaxWise Online 100 cap, in which case TaxWise Online 400 at $3,899 per year would be the relevant comparison point.
The one scenario where Drake's per-return pricing is clearly cheaper: very low volume. A preparer filing 10 individual returns or fewer per year pays $379.99 for Drake's Pay-Per-Return base (with 10 returns included) versus $675 flat for TaxWise Individual 1040. Below roughly 15 returns per year, Drake's entry-tier pricing wins on cost.

Cloud Access: Two Different Models
Cloud access is where the Drake product line gets complicated, because Drake now has two products with two different cloud answers.
Traditional Drake Tax is desktop software. To access it remotely through a browser, preparers need to host it through Rightworks (formerly Franklin Cloud, an Intuit company), which is a separate paid service and not included with the Drake license. This adds cost and a third-party dependency on top of the Drake annual fee.
Drake Tax Online (DTO), launched in late 2025, is a different product entirely. It runs entirely in the browser, requires no local install, and has no Rightworks dependency. For preparers who want Drake's approach in a pure cloud product, DTO is the answer. The tradeoff is that DTO has no desktop version, and its per-return pricing escalates with volume, as detailed in the pricing section above.
TaxWise Online is a flat-fee cloud product with TaxWise Desktop included at no added cost. One purchase covers both. For a preparer who wants to work from the browser when remote and switch to the desktop install at the office, TaxWise Online handles both without a second license or a third-party hosting service. If a single flat fee covering both cloud and desktop matters to how you work, TaxWise Online's bundled model has a structural advantage over the Drake options.
Spanish-Language Support: A Structural Difference
Both platforms have some Spanish-language resources. The difference is where in the workflow that support lives.
TaxWise includes more than 60 tax forms and schedules translated into Spanish. On-screen forms, help text, and diagnostic messages are available in Spanish inside the software. Preparers also have access to a dedicated bilingual customer support team and a full Spanish-language training portal. This is support built into the software itself, at the form level, not layered on top.
Drake has Spanish resources. The Drake blog publishes content specifically for Spanish-speaking preparers, and Drake offers Spanish-language webinars. These are genuinely useful. What Drake does not offer is TaxWise's depth of in-form bilingual support: the 60-plus translated forms inside the software, the dedicated bilingual support team, and the Spanish-language training portal are not matched at the same level by Drake's current product.
For preparers whose clients are primarily English-speaking, this distinction is not a deciding factor. For preparers serving a Spanish-speaking client base, the difference is functional: navigating a return in the client's language, with Spanish form labels and diagnostics, is a different experience from a bilingual preparer working in an English-only interface. If that describes your practice, TaxWise's bilingual infrastructure is one of its clearest differentiators.
Bank Products
Both platforms work with bank product partners. The difference is in how prominently each integrates them and how many partners are available.
TaxWise integrates with four bank product partners through the TaxWise Solution Center, which is accessible inside the software. The four partners are Santa Barbara Tax Products Group, Refund Advantage, EPS Financial, and Republic Bank and Trust. Products available include refund transfers, refund advances, Pre-Ack loans, PayLater via Pathward, and FeeCollect PS. Enrollment for all four partners is handled within the software; no separate bank application is required outside of TaxWise. Having multiple partners in one platform means you can compare settlement options and select what fits your clients each season.
Drake does work with bank product partners. Refund Advantage, which operates under Pathward, is Drake's primary bank product relationship. However, Drake does not feature bank products as prominently in its core marketing and support materials as TaxWise does. If bank products are a significant part of your revenue model, the degree of integration matters: TaxWise's Solution Center approach, with multiple partners and in-software enrollment, is more tightly woven into the return workflow.

TaxWise Expert AI vs. Drake's Current AI Offering
Wolters Kluwer launched TaxWise Online powered by Expert AI in November 2025. As of this writing, Drake has not announced a comparable native AI intake workflow for its 2026 platform.
Expert AI introduces six specific features to TaxWise Online:
- Automated Tax Document Extraction. W-2s and 1099s uploaded as images or PDFs are read by the AI and auto-populated into the corresponding fields. This eliminates manual re-keying of income documents.
- AI-Powered ID Scanning. Driver's licenses, state IDs, military IDs, and Social Security cards can be scanned. The system extracts the client's identifying information directly.
- CCH AnswerConnect In-App Search. Research-level tax guidance from the CCH database is searchable inside TaxWise Online, so preparers can look up a ruling or guidance without leaving the return they are working on.
- Visual Line Guide. An on-screen orientation tool that helps preparers track their place on the form and flag potential errors before submission.
- Referral Sharing. ERO-specific referral links let preparers share a link with prospective clients that tracks the referral source and applies a discount. Built into the software, not a separate marketing tool.
- Mobile Taxpayer Interview. Clients complete a guided intake interview on their own device before the appointment. Wolters Kluwer reports this reduces client information collection time from 30 to 60 minutes to 5 to 15 minutes. These figures come from Wolters Kluwer's own published data and have not been independently verified; results will vary by practice and client.
Drake Tax Online is a cloud product but did not include a comparable native AI document extraction or AI client intake workflow in its 2026 launch feature set. Drake launched Drake Workflow, an AI-powered practice automation tool in beta as of mid-2026, and added AI document classification to Drake Portals. These tools focus on back-office workflow automation rather than client-facing intake. TaxWise Expert AI's client intake focus (the mobile taxpayer interview reducing 30 to 60 minutes to 5 to 15 minutes, plus automatic document extraction) serves a different part of the workflow. Verify directly at drakesoftware.com for Drake's current feature list before purchasing.
For practices where intake time is a real bottleneck, the Expert AI features address a specific operational problem. For practices where client intake is already efficient, the AI features may matter less than pricing model or Spanish support. Weight this factor according to where your own time goes.
Which Practice Type Fits Each Platform
There is no universal answer. The right platform depends on how your office is structured and what your client base looks like.
TaxWise through ATP: Who It Fits
TaxWise through Americas Tax is a strong fit for independent preparers and small offices of one to five people handling 15 or more individual returns per year. At that volume, the flat-fee pricing model delivers a lower total annual cost than Drake Tax Online's per-return model. The larger the return volume, the wider that gap becomes.
TaxWise is the practical choice for preparers with Spanish-speaking clients, given the 60-plus translated forms and dedicated bilingual support. It fits preparers who rely on bank products for client revenue, because of the four-partner integration in the Solution Center. And it fits preparers who want cloud and desktop access without paying for two separate products or a third-party hosting service.
If you are switching from another platform, Americas Tax can help with the transition. Verify your current software's data export options before the season, and allow time for training before your first active filing day. For more information on the purchasing process, see software.html.
Traditional Drake Tax: Who It Fits
Traditional Drake has earned its position in the market. It has a large and loyal user base, a well-developed knowledge base, and high user ratings in industry surveys. Preparers who have used Drake for years and have their workflow built around it face a real switching cost: time to learn new software and migrate existing client data. For established offices where Drake is embedded and the pricing is not a friction point, staying with Drake is a defensible choice.
Drake is also a reasonable choice for preparers who are comfortable with a desktop-primary platform and either do not need cloud access or are willing to add Rightworks for remote use. Drake's form library is deep, its error-checking is well-regarded, and the support resources available through the Drake community are extensive.
Drake Tax Online (DTO): Who It Fits
DTO is designed for preparers who want a pure cloud experience with no install and no desktop component. It is competitively priced at the low end of the volume range: under approximately 15 to 20 individual returns per year, the per-return pricing is cheaper than TaxWise Individual 1040 at $675 flat. Above that threshold, the math shifts.
DTO also suits preparers who are new to Drake and want to start with a cloud-native product rather than learning the desktop platform. It is the lighter of Drake's two options in terms of setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Drake Tax require Rightworks for cloud access?
It depends on which Drake product you use. Traditional Drake Tax (the desktop platform) requires Rightworks cloud hosting if you want to access it remotely from a browser. Drake Tax Online (DTO), a separate product launched in late 2025, is browser-native and does not require Rightworks. DTO is priced per return ($43 per individual return as of June 2026; verify at drakesoftware.com before purchasing) rather than as a flat annual fee.
Can I switch from Drake to TaxWise mid-year?
Generally yes, though switching software platforms mid-season carries real risk. You will need to allow time for installation and training before filing season resumes. TaxWise supports prior-year data import, and Americas Tax can walk you through the transition process. If you are considering a switch, the cleaner path is to start TaxWise at the beginning of a new tax season rather than mid-year. Contact Americas Tax at 224-388-1774 to discuss a transition timeline.
Does TaxWise include bank products?
Yes. TaxWise integrates with four bank product partners through the TaxWise Solution Center: Santa Barbara Tax Products Group, Refund Advantage, EPS Financial, and Republic Bank and Trust. Enrollment is handled within the software; no separate bank application is required outside of TaxWise. Available products include refund transfers, refund advances, Pre-Ack loans, and PayLater via Pathward. For more detail on how bank products work, see the bank products guide.
What does ATP support include for TaxWise customers?
Americas Tax (ATP) is an IRS-authorized e-file transmitter and an authorized CCH TaxWise reseller operating continuously since 2001. Support includes phone and email assistance, IRS-authorized e-file transmission for federal and all-state returns, and access to the full TaxWise software package. For preparers new to e-filing or the EFIN process, see how to get an EFIN. To reach ATP directly, call 224-388-1774 or email info@americastax.com.
