Introduction

If you are an independent tax preparer or small office owner evaluating software before next season, the options can feel overwhelming. Drake, ProSeries, ATX, CrossLink, TaxSlayer Pro, ProConnect, and UltraTax CS all compete for your purchase, and each is priced and structured differently.

This page compares TaxWise directly against those seven products across the factors that matter most to EROs and EFIN holders: annual price range, pricing model, cloud and desktop access, bank product partners, Spanish-language support, and AI-assisted intake. Jump to the comparison table for the side-by-side view, or read through for a full breakdown of what each platform offers and which type of practice each one is designed for.

For a dedicated head-to-head comparison of Drake Tax and TaxWise specifically, including break-even pricing math and a side-by-side table, see the Drake vs. TaxWise comparison.

What to Look for When Comparing Professional Tax Software

No two tax offices are structured the same way, and the software that works for a 500-return firm is rarely the right fit for a solo preparer handling 80 clients. Before you compare prices, clarify which of these six factors are most important to your practice.

Pricing Model: Per-Return vs. Flat Annual Fee

Per-return pricing looks cheaper at low volumes, but the total cost rises fast as you add clients. Flat annual packages cost more upfront but cap your per-season expense regardless of how many returns you file. For preparers filing more than 50-70 returns per season, flat-fee pricing typically results in a lower total annual cost. To compare accurately, multiply your expected return volume by each vendor's per-return fee, add the annual base cost, and compare that total against flat-fee alternatives.

Return Volume Fit

Most platforms offer multiple tiers tied to return volume. Buying a tier that is too small forces a mid-season upgrade. Buying one that is too large wastes money. Know your client count before you shop.

Bank Product Integration

If your clients rely on refund transfers, refund advances, or Pre-Ack loans, you need software with integrated bank product partners. The number of partners matters: more partners give you flexibility on rates and backup options if one partner changes its terms.

E-File Authorization

All professional software supports federal e-filing, but confirm which platform includes state e-filing in the base price vs. as an add-on. If you are a new preparer, you also need an active EFIN before you can transmit returns through any platform. See the EFIN application guide and Americas Tax e-file authorization information.

Spanish-Language Support

For preparers serving Spanish-speaking clients, native bilingual support at the form level is a functional requirement, not a nice-to-have. Check whether Spanish support means a translated interface, Spanish-language forms, or both, and whether the vendor offers bilingual customer support and training.

Learning Curve

A platform that takes three months to learn is a real cost. Evaluate whether the software has an interview mode for guided data entry, on-screen help, and training resources matched to your experience level.

What TaxWise Includes for Independent Preparers

TaxWise is published by Wolters Kluwer Tax and Accounting, the same CCH brand behind ATX. It has been in continuous operation since 1971. The product is designed specifically for independent preparers and small tax offices, and the features below reflect that focus.

Flat-Fee Packages With Desktop Included

Most platforms separate desktop and cloud access into two different products or charge per-user fees for cloud access. TaxWise Online packages include TaxWise Desktop software at no additional charge. That means you can run cloud-based returns from any location and switch to desktop when local control or offline access is preferred, without paying for two platforms.

Through Americas Tax, the Individual 1040 package starts at $675 (full payment) and covers individual returns with federal and state e-file transmission included at tiered per-return rates ($4.75-$10.00 per federal return). The All States add-on is $295, and the Business Package is $345, each requiring an active Individual 1040 purchase. For higher-volume practices, TaxWise Online 100 (100 individual returns) is $1,849/year and TaxWise Online 400 is $3,899/year, both bundling desktop access at no extra cost.

Four Bank Product Partners in One Platform

TaxWise integrates with four bank product partners: Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (sbtpg), Refund Advantage, EPS Financial, and Republic Bank and Trust. Products available through this network include refund transfers, refund advances, Pre-Ack loans, PayLater (formerly FeeCollect, via Pathward), and FeeCollect PS.

Enrollment is handled through the TaxWise Solution Center within the software itself. No separate bank application process is required. Having four partners in one platform means you can compare settlement options and select the arrangement that works for your client volume and preferences. CrossLink, by comparison, integrates with one bank partner (Santa Barbara TPG). Drake does not prominently feature bank product integration.

TaxWise Online Powered by Expert AI

Wolters Kluwer launched TaxWise Online powered by Expert AI in November 2025. The system automates several of the most time-consuming parts of the intake process: W-2 and 1099 document extraction via AI, ID scanning for driver's licenses, state IDs, military IDs, and Social Security cards, and a streamlined mobile interview process and secure document exchange.

Wolters Kluwer reports that taxpayer information collection time is reduced from 30-60 minutes to 5-15 minutes per client, data entry is reduced from 30-60 minutes to under 1 minute, and research time on common questions is reduced from 1-2 hours to 5-30 minutes. These figures come from Wolters Kluwer's own reporting and have not been independently verified. Results will vary based on your practice volume and client document quality.

Drake Tax, ATX, and CrossLink have not announced native, built-in AI document extraction comparable to Expert AI as of this writing. TaxSlayer Pro has partnered with third-party AI document tools but has not released a comparable native feature. ProSeries and ProConnect offer QuickBooks-linked data import but not a comparable standalone AI intake workflow.

60+ Forms and Full Support in Spanish

TaxWise includes more than 60 tax forms and schedules in Spanish. On-screen forms, help text, and diagnostics are available in Spanish within the software. Preparers also have access to a dedicated bilingual customer support team and a full Spanish-language training portal.

For preparers whose client base includes Spanish-speaking taxpayers, this infrastructure is a functional advantage. Drake, ProSeries, CrossLink, and TaxSlayer Pro do not offer comparable bilingual depth at the form count and training level TaxWise provides.

E-File Authorization Across Federal and State Returns

Americas Tax is an IRS-authorized e-file provider and has transmitted professional tax returns since 2001. TaxWise supports federal and state e-filing for 1040, 1065, 1120, 1120S, 1041, 706, 709, and 990, with prior-year e-file also supported.

If you are a new preparer, you need an active Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) before you can transmit returns. See how to get an EFIN. For more information on e-file authorization and how Americas Tax handles transmissions, visit our e-file page.

Which Tax Software Fits Your Practice?

The right software depends on your return volume, your client mix, and the features you rely on most.

TaxWise is a strong fit for solo preparers and offices of 1-5 people filing individual returns, preparers who serve Spanish-speaking clients and need native bilingual forms and support, EROs who rely on bank products (refund transfers, advances, Pre-Ack loans) and want multiple partner options, and preparers who want both cloud and desktop access without paying for two separate platforms. The Americas Tax reseller pricing at $675 for Individual 1040 makes it accessible for new preparers and those building a client base. For preparers with questions about their credentials or setup, Americas Tax's background as an IRS-authorized provider since 2001 is described on the About page.

Drake Tax is well suited for established sole practitioners and small firms who prioritize a large form library, highly rated customer support (4.4/5 in the 2025 AICPA Tax Software Survey), and a stable platform. Preparers who do not need bank product integration and are comfortable with a dated interface often find Drake reliable and fast.

ProSeries works well when your clients are already in the QuickBooks ecosystem and you want tight integration between bookkeeping and tax preparation. It is less cost-effective for preparers outside the Intuit stack.

ATX is designed for mid-to-large CPA firms that handle complex or specialty returns and need access to more than 6,000 federal, state, and local forms. The higher entry price and desktop-only delivery make it a less practical fit for small offices or preparers who work remotely.

UltraTax CS is built for large accounting firms and multi-location practices with the budget and staff to support a platform of that scale. At a real-world cost of approximately $7,000-$25,000 per year, it is outside the realistic range for most independent preparers.

CrossLink is a strong fit for high-volume retail tax offices and service bureaus that need unlimited users on a single license. If your office has multiple preparers working simultaneously and does not need bilingual support or multiple bank partners, CrossLink's unlimited-user model is worth evaluating.

TaxSlayer Pro is well suited for solo practitioners who prioritize affordability and a clean interface and do not have a significant Spanish-speaking client base or need for deep specialty form coverage.

ProConnect is designed for CPA practices already operating within QuickBooks Online Accountant that file under approximately 50-70 returns per season. Above that volume, the per-return cost model becomes more expensive than flat-fee alternatives.

Common Questions About TaxWise and Competitors

Is TaxWise the same as ATX?

No. TaxWise and ATX are both published by Wolters Kluwer Tax and Accounting (the CCH brand), but they are separate products positioned at different market segments. TaxWise is designed for independent preparers and small tax offices, with a lower entry price and bilingual support. ATX is designed for mid-to-large CPA firms handling complex returns, with access to more than 6,000 federal, state, and local forms and a higher price floor. They share Wolters Kluwer's underlying infrastructure, but they are sold, priced, and supported as distinct products.

Does TaxWise include bank products?

Yes. TaxWise integrates with four bank product partners: Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (sbtpg), Refund Advantage, EPS Financial, and Republic Bank and Trust. Available products include refund transfers, refund advances, Pre-Ack loans, PayLater (via Pathward), and FeeCollect PS. Enrollment is managed through the TaxWise Solution Center within the software; no separate bank application is required.

Can I use TaxWise online and on desktop?

Yes. TaxWise Online flat-fee packages include TaxWise Desktop software at no additional charge. You can file cloud-based returns from any location and use the desktop version when local access or offline capability is preferred, without purchasing two separate products.

How does TaxWise pricing compare to Drake Tax?

The two platforms use different pricing structures, which makes a direct comparison depend on your return volume. Drake Tax offers a Pay-Per-Return plan starting at $379.99 per year, plus per-return fees for individual and business returns above the included base. TaxWise offers both a reseller per-return model (through Americas Tax, from $675 for Individual 1040) and flat-fee online tiers (TaxWise Online 100 at $1,849/year for 100 individual returns).

Drake Tax Online (DTO), launched in 2026, adds a browser-native cloud option to Drake's lineup at $43 per individual return and $299.99 per user annually (as of June 2026; verify current pricing at drakesoftware.com before purchasing). For a mid-volume independent preparer doing 80 returns per year, DTO would cost approximately $299.99 + (80 x $43) = $3,740. TaxWise Online 100 through Americas Tax is $1,849 flat for 100 individual returns, a difference of roughly $1,891 at that volume. The break-even is approximately 43 individual returns per year: below that number, DTO costs less; above it, TaxWise Online 100 costs less. For the independent preparer filing 50 or more returns per season, the flat-fee model delivers lower total annual cost.

To compare total annual cost accurately, add your expected return volume multiplied by each platform's per-return fee to that platform's annual base cost, then compare that sum against the relevant flat-fee tier. Verify current pricing directly with Drake Software and with Americas Tax before purchasing, as prices change annually.

Does TaxWise offer Spanish-language support?

Yes. TaxWise includes more than 60 tax forms and schedules in Spanish. On-screen forms, help, and diagnostics are available in Spanish within the software. Preparers have access to a dedicated bilingual customer support team and a full Spanish-language training portal. This is a differentiator compared to Drake, ProSeries, CrossLink, and TaxSlayer Pro, none of which offer comparable native bilingual infrastructure at the form-count and training-depth level that TaxWise provides.

What is the difference between TaxWise and TaxSlayer Pro?

Both platforms are designed for solo practitioners and small offices, and both offer cloud and desktop access with flat annual pricing. TaxWise offers more than 60 Spanish-language forms, four integrated bank product partners, and TaxWise Online powered by Expert AI (launched by Wolters Kluwer in November 2025), which introduced AI-powered document extraction and ID scanning. TaxSlayer Pro's pricing ($1,395-$1,695/year) is competitive, and its bank product lineup is broad (five partners, including Refundo). For preparers whose client base includes Spanish-speaking taxpayers or who want AI-assisted intake, TaxWise's infrastructure is more developed. For preparers where affordability is the primary factor and bilingual support is not a requirement, TaxSlayer Pro is a reasonable alternative to evaluate.

What bank products does TaxWise integrate with?

TaxWise integrates with four partners: Santa Barbara Tax Products Group (sbtpg), Refund Advantage, EPS Financial, and Republic Bank and Trust. Enrollment for all four is handled within the software through the Solution Center. Available bank products include refund transfers, refund advances, Pre-Ack loans, PayLater (formerly FeeCollect, via Pathward), and FeeCollect PS. Preparers can compare partner options within the platform and select the arrangement that fits their clients. Americas Tax does not rank the partners by rate or fee; those terms are set by each bank and should be reviewed directly.
